Mouth to Mouth

“Do you have a moment, nurse?”

She puts the clipboard down.

“Yes, doctor?”

They look into each other’s eyes. They move closer. He takes his stethoscope off. His hand slides forward on the table until his fingers are touching hers…

The scene shifts to a badly-lit landing, where an old woman in crinkly stockings talks to her meowing cat.

“All right, Lucky. I’ll get your dinner. It’s just… I don’t feel so good today.”

She puts a shrivelled hand to her head and teeters at the top of the staircase. Her skinny foot misses the step, and she tumbles. Lucky looks on as she rolls downstairs.

Back in the room with the shelves and bottles, the doctor and the nurse embrace. She pulls back.

“No, I mustn’t, Max. I can’t. It isn’t fair to Steven.”

“Forget him, Linda,” he whispers. “You’re mine.”

Nurse Linda lets him pull her closer.

“Yes, Max. All yours. Always and forever.”

They hold each other tight and kiss as the camera slowly moves away. It zooms in on the table, where his stethoscope entwines her clipboard. Music dripping with violins swells over the words splashed on the screen: Mouth to Mouth.

He tries the other channels, hoping for something better to watch. He sighs. More tea and toast, maybe? Or maybe…
